Nottingham City of Caves

Discover a hidden world underneath the streets of Nottingham.

This underground world is part of a hidden maze of more than 500 sandstone caves below the city of Nottingham, dating back to the dark ages. The family attraction that is now the City Of Caves is possible thanks to the soft Sherwood Sandstone beneath Nottingham that allowed hand-carved cellars to be excavated and used as storerooms, factories, pub cellars, dwellings and even air raid shelters. Archaeologists are still investigating the maze of tunnels to see where they lead and what more there is to find.

Enjoy a tour of the caves to learn about the historical events that took place in this fascinating subterranean world, and the social history associated with them.

Visit Nottingham Castle

Visit Nottingham Castle, an historic site at the heart of the Robin Hood legend and the starting point for the English Civil War.

Situated on a high rock, Nottingham Castle commands spectacular views over the city and once rivalled the great castles of Windsor and the Tower of London.

Its history is chequered with sieges, murders and intrigue. Totally destroyed after the Civil War, the medieval castle was replaced by a magnificent ducal mansion in 1674. Then in 1875 it was converted into the first municipal museum and art gallery outside London. Award-winning cave tours tell this history and take you down into the passageways and tunnels beneath the building.

A total of £30 million has been invested to redevelop Nottingham Castle, including the Ducal Palace, grounds and the sprawling cave systems.

The site with over one thousand years of history is now open. Nottingham Castle has been revitalised to reflect the wealth of its history, the depth of its collections and the lives of the people of Nottingham.
